Tem gente que acha o Cerrado feio… Eu acho lindo!

Basta ver a caliandra (Calliandra dysantha) intensamente vermelha e delicada. A bela e frágil flor lilás da escultural canela-de-ema (Vellozia squamata) ou ainda o chuveirinho (Paepalanthus sp.) um tanto surreal na vegetação.

As folhas também são muito interessantes. São cores, texturas e espessuras variadas. Tem aquelas cobertas por pelos (pilosas) e as rígidas e espessas (coreáceas). Folhas vermelhas, recém-nascidas, folhas prateadas. E as árvores, com caules tortos, de casca grossa. Puro charme! Fauna rica e diversificada: tucanos, periquitos, araras, tatus, macacos-prego, micos, veados, tamanduás, jaguatiricas entre outros.

Mas para entender o que estou falando e comprovar como o Cerrado é maravilhoso, sugiro uma visitinha. Uma caminhada no Jardim Botânico de Brasília, uma trilha na Chapada Imperial ou um fim de semana na Chapada dos Veadeiros mudará qualquer opinião contrária. Flora e fauna típicas além de lindas cachoeiras. 

PS. E aproveite rápido, pois as lavouras e o desenfreado crescimento urbano estão aí, destruindo todo o Cerrado que resta!

Some people think the Cerrado is ugly… I think it’s beautiful!

Just look at the intensely red and delicate calliandra (Calliandra dysantha), the beautiful and fragile lilac flower of the sculptural canela-de-ema (Vellozia squamata), or the somewhat surreal chuveirinho (Paepalanthus sp.) in the vegetation.

The leaves are also very interesting. They come in various colors, textures, and thicknesses. Some are covered with hairs (pilose) and others are rigid and thick (coriaceous). There are newly sprouted red leaves and silver leaves. And the trees, with their twisted trunks and thick bark. Pure charm! The fauna is rich and diverse: toucans, parakeets, macaws, armadillos, capuchin monkeys, marmosets, deer, anteaters, ocelots, among others. 

But to understand what I’m talking about and to see how wonderful the Cerrado is, I suggest a visit. A walk in the Brasília Botanical Garden, a trail in the Chapada Imperial, or a weekend in the Chapada dos Veadeiros will change any contrary opinion. Typical flora and fauna, as well as beautiful waterfalls. 

P.S. Enjoy it quickly, as the farms and rampant urban growth are destroying all that remains of the Cerrado!
