Sabe aquela arvorezinha, com folhinhas verde brilhantes, que chegou bem pequenininha, inofensiva, e você plantou ali, ao lado da casa, na calçada, para sombrear os carros estacionados na rua? Ela irá crescer rapidamente. Mais rápido do que você imagina.

Suas raízes irão procurar água e nutrientes, com se tivessem sempre uma intensa sede e fome. Se encontrarem um cano pelo caminho, ótimo: servirá de fonte. Não contentes com a água ali absorvida, continuarão a procurar, penetrando cada vez mais na terra. Enquanto isso seu tronco, galhos e copa aumentam proporcionalmente. Neste momento ela estará oferecendo uma generosa sombra, densa, felicidade para o dono da casa e os motoristas que ali param. Sua sombra será disputada! No jardim a sua volta, a grama morre devido à intensa sombra. Algumas plantas começam a definhar. A competição com as raízes do fícus é impossível.

Mais algum tempo e a calçada começa a rachar, o asfalto da rua levanta. As raízes começam, visivelmente, a mostrar sua força. Se elas encontrarem um muro ou parede pela frente elas não hesitarão em quebrá-lo para continuarem sua frenética busca por alimento e água.

Estranhamente a conta d’água fica cada vez mais cara.

- Será que é o fícus?

- Não, não pode ser…

- Mas talvez… Já reparou como a calçada está levantando?

Logo, a surpresa: alguém mais está usando a água.

- Está decidido: vamos cortar a árvore.

Quando começa a poda, descobre-se que as raízes já estavam sob os alicerces da casa, a um passo de provocar rachaduras nas paredes e comprometer a construção. Ufa, essa foi por pouco!

O Ficus benjamina, pertence à família das moráceas, a mesma da amora, figo, fruta-pão. Árvore nativa do sul e do sudeste da Ásia e alcança mais de 30 m de altura e 40 m de diâmetro. É a árvore oficial de Bangkok, Tailândia. Neste país há uma região onde existem centenárias árvores de fícus. Percebe-se a dominância da espécie, pois nada mais cresce mais na área, abafada por sua impenetrável sombra e suas raízes que preenchem completamente o subsolo.

Seu uso como árvore é indicado para parques e fazendas. Se quiser ter um em casa, mantenha-o em vaso. Segundo pesquisas da NASA, o fícus mantido dentro de casa filtra as toxinas do ar. Nas cercas-vivas, o mais seguro é manter um afastamento de 10 m de tubulações e construções, pois, mesmo podado, suas raízes crescem muito.

Em muitas cidades, por causa da destruição que a árvore causa, o plantio do fícus está proibido.

Ficus benjamina: It’s a Danger!

You know that little tree with shiny green leaves that arrived very small and harmless, and you planted it there, next to the house, on the sidewalk, to shade the cars parked on the street? It will grow quickly. Faster than you imagine.

Its roots will seek water and nutrients, as if always extremely thirsty and hungry. If they find a pipe along the way, great: it will serve as a source. Not content with the water absorbed there, they will continue to search, penetrating deeper into the soil. Meanwhile, its trunk, branches, and canopy will grow proportionally. At this point, it will provide generous, dense shade, much to the delight of the homeowner and the drivers who park there. Its shade will be highly sought after! In the garden around it, the grass will die due to the intense shade. Some plants will begin to wither. Competing with the roots of the ficus is impossible.

After some time, the sidewalk will start to crack, the asphalt of the street will lift. The roots will visibly show their strength. If they encounter a wall or a building, they will not hesitate to break through it to continue their frantic search for food and water.

Strangely, the water bill gets more expensive. 

- Could it be the ficus? 

- No, it can’t be… 

- But maybe… Have you noticed how the sidewalk is lifting? 

Soon, the surprise: someone else is using the water. 

- It’s decided: we’re cutting down the tree. 

When the pruning begins, it’s discovered that the roots were already under the house’s foundations, a step away from causing cracks in the walls and compromising the structure. Whew, that was close! 

The Ficus benjamina belongs to the Moraceae family, the same as mulberry, fig, and breadfruit. It is native to South and Southeast Asia and can reach over 30 meters in height and 40 meters in diameter. It is the official tree of Bangkok, Thailand. In this country, there is a region where there are centuries-old ficus trees. The dominance of the species is noticeable, as nothing else grows in the area, suffocated by its impenetrable shade and roots that completely fill the subsoil. 

Its use as a tree is recommended for parks and farms. If you want to have one at home, keep it in a pot. According to NASA research, a ficus kept indoors filters air toxins. In hedges, it is safest to maintain a 10-meter distance from pipes and buildings because, even when pruned, its roots grow extensively. 

In many cities, due to the destruction the tree causes, planting ficus is prohibited.
